Saddle up and prepare for the long game
A couple of years ago, general advice was that job seekers should allow up to 6 months to find their next role.
Focused and active job hunters would move into a new job around the 3 to 4 month mark, and that would have been my advice to clients at the time.
In 2025, the game has changed. Now we’re playing the long game. I’d be planning my next move 12 months before I wanted to make it.
Most of the best jobs — the ones that really suit you — aren’t on job boards.
They’re:
~ Sent through a warm intro
~ Shared informally over coffee
~ Offered to people already visible online or inside
Want to tap into that hidden job market?
You’ll need a strategy that’s smarter than spray-and-pray.
There’s a difference between looking for a job and strategically planning your next move.
Playing a numbers game via Quick Applies isn’t a strategy.
Hoping someone stumbles across your profile isn’t a strategy.
Waking up one day and deciding you’re DONE isn’t a strategy.
But knowing what you want, who to talk to, and how to tell your story? That’s a strategy. That’s how great jobs are secured.
For example, a polished LinkedIn profile is great — but it’s not the full story.
It’s the conversation starter, not the closer.
What really matters is what happens after someone reads it:
→ Are you building relationships?
→ Are you making your expertise visible?
→ Are you using your profile to start real conversations?
If your LinkedIn isn’t helping you feel seen, heard or headhunted — it’s time for a smarter strategy.
To help you on your way, here are 5 non-braggy LinkedIn posts that are so simple that you can start using them tomorrow:
1 - celebrate a team success or milestone. A sound option whether you’re a people leader or a participant.
2 - share job openings at your organisation and why it’s a great place to work.
3 - share a photo and personal reflection from your holiday or time off.
4 - if you’ve been to, or are at, a training course or conference, share something you’ve learnt or a key takeaway. Ditto for recommendations of good professional development books or general good reads.
5 - if you’ve received top service or recently done business with someone who deserves a shout out, tag them in a post so others can connect with them.
The bottom line? The old rules don’t apply anymore. You need a thoughtful, strategic, and sustainable approach if you want to land a role that truly fits — not just any role that happens to be available.
