Why it’s so hard to write (well) about yourself and it pays dividends to hire someone (like me) to do it for you

Your resume/CV (I tend to say CV, but same same) should make you feel warm and glowing when you read it. It should make you want to hire you. It should also be up-to-date and ready to go at all times. A big challenge for many people is selling themselves with confidence.

Here are 5 reasons why it’s so hard to write (well) about yourself and it pays dividends to hire someone (like me) to do it for you.

  1. It can feel a little icky singing our own praises and it’s often hard to articulate the value of our contributions without feeling braggy. This is why it’s so easy to fall into the habit of listing tasks and duties rather than achievements.

  2. There is a tendency to only add new content to your existing CV rather than revisiting it as a whole. Many people don’t even scroll back to the first job entry when updating their CV. As a result you may find the language and tone becomes inconsistent over time, particularly if it’s been a few (maybe even 10!) years since you refreshed the entire document.

  3. We often leave updating our CVs until we want or need to find a new job, or spot something of interest. By this time the clock is ticking and we are either in a negative headspace in our current situation or the closing date is looming. It is very hard to write well about ourselves under pressure. As I mention in my opening paragraph, your CV should be up-to-date (at least reasonably so) at all times. While I can help with short notice requests, the moral of this story is to book in for a CV refresh now and breathe easier later!

  4. It’s easy to underestimate the value of transferable skills, particularly when trying to shift industries or where you ‘almost but not quite’ meet the selection criteria for a role. The fresh eyes of an outsider might be able to spot opportunities to showcase or reframe something which will get you across the line to interview.

  5. The reality is, we aren’t all born writers. And that’s a good thing because we also need doctors, Uber drivers, accountants, teachers, cleaners, and so on. A communications expert will craft your CV in an impactful and succinct way, using language that will engage the reader quickly. Typo-free.
